Instructor or Assistant Professor of Communication (Journalism and/or Sports Media)

The Mississippi College Department of Communication prepares students to be successful

communicators with their words, skills, and lives. Mississippi College is hiring an Instructor or

Assistant Professor of Communication, with an emphasis in Journalism and/or Sports Media, to

work with and guide students in their academic pursuits; to model a personal, active, and vibrant

Christian faith; to prepare students for future professional opportunities; and, working as a faculty

sponsor and advisor, to accelerate student media efforts in digital, video, and audio production and

distribution. This individual will teach courses in the Communication core and in departmental

academic concentrations of journalism and sports media. Applicants should be superior written

and verbal communicators with relevant experience and evidence of work in digital journalism

and/or sports media. The successful candidate will be an individual who values student success

and student-faculty interaction; who is committed to working in a collegial environment marked

by Christian hospitality; and who is eager to contribute his or her skills and abilities to the

university community. This appointment is a nine-month, tenure-track position (for candidates

with a terminal degree) with summer teaching opportunities available based on student demand.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include teaching four classes per semester (fall and spring), advising students,

serving on university and department committees, advising or co-advising student media

organizations, and participating in departmental activities as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum requirements include a master’s degree in communication, journalism, or related field

from an accredited institution and professional experience in the areas listed above. Applicants

with a Ph.D. (or who are ABD) in communication, journalism, or related field are preferred.

Applicants with a master’s degree and/or professional experience in digital or video journalism

and/or sports media will be considered. Candidates with a background and/or professional

experience only in print journalism will not be considered. This individual reports to the chair of

the Department of Communication.
