Journalism Director
The Roy Howard Community Journalism Center is looking for a founding director. The
journalism center is based at the University of Southern Mississippi and is the result of a unique
partnership between the university and the Scripps Howard Foundation.
The ideal candidate will be a visionary leader and high energy journalist with some experience
leading teams in a news environment across platforms. When fully staffed, the center will have
five full-time positions and more than 16 students working across platform.
The goal of the center is to strengthen community journalism in Southeast Mississippi by doing
high impact news work and working with area outlets to advance their vision and goals for how
they want to cover their communities.
Requirements include:
Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field.
Five to seven years media experience with a rising level of responsibility.
Ability to lead teams to achieve the highest level of professional standards.
Skills necessary to be the face of the center to the university and Southeast Mississippi
community.
Salary and benefits:
Annual salary range is $86,000 to $100,000.
Position is as a state, university employee with accompanying healthcare, retirement and other
benefits.
This position is based in Hattiesburg, MS.
